There are two Nature Reserves surrounding Val Gardena: The Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Resreve and the Puez-Odle Nature Reserve.
The first covers an overall surface area of 6,796 hectares. Together with the Protected Landscape Area of Alpe di Siusi, it forms a single natural unit. The Sciliar – with its two peaks - Punta Santner and Punta Euringer – is considered one of the emblems of Alto Adige. The highest peak of the massif is that of Monte Pez (2,563 m). The woods around Tires, Fiè and Siusi together with the Val Ciamin valley are part of the nature reserve and thanks to an extension of the area into the territory of the Municipality of Tires, the Catinaccio has also been part of the protected area since 2003.
The Puez-Odle Nature Reserve covers a surface area of 10,196 hectares. The protected area is delimited to the north by the Passo delle Erbe, to the south by Passo Gardena; to the east the Reserve extends as far as the Val Badia and to the west to the valleys of Funes and Gardena. This nature reserve is considered the “workshop” of the Dolomites; here in fact geologists can observe all kinds of rocks, study tectonic activity and the erosion phenomena typical of the Dolomites.
